Estelle Chessid was as a dealer of antiquarian books and owner of “The Book Chest”. Up until the mid-1990s she participated in many of the NY Book Fairs produced by Sanford L. Smith & Associates as well as many smaller national fairs. She specialized in natural history and illustrated works from the 15th to the 20th centuries. She was on the National Board of Governors of the ABAA and for many years was Chairman of the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association Cooperative at Rockefeller Center in New York City.
Estelle is now trying on a new hat. Ms. Chessid will be one of the featured artists in another one of Sanford L. Smith’s fairs, The Outsider Art Fair at 7 West 34th Street from February 11 – February 13, 2011. Outside of the antiquarian book world, Estelle has always created art in her spare time. Her art concentrates on collaging and the assemblage of pieces and cut outs of chosen antiquarian books. Her works are informed by her extensive knowledge and love of early illustrated books, and are inspired by such varied sources as Persian miniatures, Japanese woodblock prints, medieval illuminations, and political caricatures.
